Does digital estimating actually improve bid accuracy?

“Digital estimating improves accuracy” is the kind of claim software sites make without saying what it means. It is worth being specific: accuracy problems in estimates come from a small number of actual causes, and digital tools only fix some of them. Here is which is which.

Where estimate errors actually come from

  • Pricing from memory. “I think that unit runs about eighteen-fifty” is how a lot of estimates get written, and material prices move more often than memory keeps up with.
  • Missed line items. The haul-off fee, the permit, the fitting kit — small items that are easy to forget writing an estimate by hand at the end of a long day, and that quietly erase margin when they are missing.
  • Arithmetic slips. Quantity times unit price, tax, deposit — simple math done fast and by hand produces simple mistakes, and a total that is off by a decimal point on a big-ticket item is an expensive one.
  • Scope that was never written down. The estimate said “replace water heater” and not “haul-off included, permit not included” — and the disagreement shows up mid-job instead of before it starts.

What digital estimating actually fixes
