Searching for a “download” or a “demo” of estimating software is a habit left over from installed desktop programs. Most modern estimating tools are web apps — there is nothing to download, and a free trial is usually a real account you can use today, not a scheduled call with a salesperson. Here is what to actually look for.
What a real free trial should let you do
- Finish a real estimate, not a preview. A trial that only lets you see a sample or a locked demo screen is a marketing page, not a trial. You should be able to type an actual job you are quoting and get a document you could send.
- Start without talking to anyone first. If access requires booking a call before you can even see the product, that is a sales process, not a trial — it usually means the product is priced for a much bigger buyer than a small crew.
- Show you the real price book behavior. A trial that hides pricing logic behind “contact us for a quote” is not letting you evaluate the thing you actually need to know before you switch tools: whether it prices the way you do.
What to be wary of
A trial that requires a credit card up front to “prevent abuse” is common and not automatically a red flag, but it does mean you are on the hook to remember to cancel. A no-card trial is lower risk and a better sign the product is built to earn a subscription rather than count on people forgetting to cancel. Also watch for “free electrical estimating alternatives” and similar searches turning up spreadsheet templates and stripped-down freeware — useful for a start, but usually missing e-sign, deposits, and follow-up entirely, which is most of what a real estimate tool is for.
