How to get more contractor leads without buying them

By Stefan · founder, Toolbelt by Crewcraft

Lead-buying services are seductive because they work immediately. They are also rented — the moment you stop paying, the phone stops. The channels worth building are the ones that keep producing after you stop feeding them.

Fix the leak before adding water

Most shops do not have a lead problem. They have a conversion problem wearing a lead problem’s coat. Before spending anything, check three numbers:

  • How many calls go unanswered? A missed call is a lead you already paid for, going to whoever answers next.
  • How long until a quote goes out? If it is two days, you are losing jobs you already won the visit for.
  • How many quotes never get followed up? Usually most of them.

Fixing these costs nothing and typically lifts booked work more than any new channel would.

The channels that compound

Google Business Profile

The highest-return free asset a local trade business has. The map pack takes most of the “near me” clicks, and reviews plus completeness decide who is in it.

Reviews, continuously

Steady beats impressive. Ten reviews a year forever outperforms forty in one month and then silence, because recency is part of how you are ranked.

Past customers

The cheapest work you will ever book. A seasonal reminder to people who already trust you converts at rates no advertising matches, and it costs an email.

Referrals, asked for properly

“If you know anyone who needs this doing, I’d appreciate it” at the end of a good job. Most contractors never say it out loud.

Other trades

The plumber who finds a bad panel and the electrician who finds a leak are both holding a lead they cannot use. Two or three genuine relationships here produce steady work for years.

Where paid fits

Paid is for filling a specific gap — a slow month, a new service, a territory you are expanding into. It is a tap, not a foundation. If paid is your only channel, your business is a rental.

Speed is the whole game

Homeowners typically contact three or four companies, and the first useful response wins a disproportionate share. Not the cheapest. The first. Which means an instant reply to an after-hours enquiry is worth more than a better headline on an ad.

Catch the ones arriving at 2am

Toolbelt’s emergency lead page gives homeowners a form that replies instantly in your name, emails you the details and keeps them in one inbox — so the lead that arrives while you sleep is still yours in the morning. Three free estimates, no card.
